Do Good on Mother’s Day
We owe a lot to moms. They’ve cared for us when we were sick, cooked our favorite meals and helped many of us become who we are.
Mother’s Day is the perfect time to honor all the moms and families who mean so much to us.
Spend the day in service with Mom
Moms have given a lot of time to us, so why not make the most of a day with her and give back to the community together? Many organizations that support those in need make it easy to volunteer as a group.
Family-to-Family is a mom-founded non-profit that brings families with more together with families with less, inspiring service and connection. Help a family in need and share food, letters, sentiments, smiles and strength.
One of the best ways to bond is to get active together. Go on a walk—and invite others — or try making your favorite childhood meal together. And make a little extra for your local shelter.
Make the day of a mom near you
Being a mom isn’t always easy—especially if times are tough. Helping mothers in your area who may lack the resources and support they need can make their day or year. Many organizations throughout the country provide refuge, education, empowerment and goods to young and struggling mothers.
Head Start is a great place to begin. It emphasizes the role of parents in their children’s education, and helping a mother through Head Start can leave a lasting impact on her kids. Head Start can help you get a school supply drive or other project off the ground. Also, consider joining or starting a local chapter of the Mommies Network, which helps moms find support and friendship. Start a diaper drive or other fundraising activity with Help a Mother Out, which distributes diapers to families in need.
You could also offer financial counseling. Assist with budgeting, help a family save energy or access public benefits, or talk about strategies for saving at the grocery store. Many of the skills needed— listening, patience and empathy—are the kind moms model for us.
Maybe you’d prefer to get global and offer your organizational and project management services to groups like Global Fund for Women. You can volunteer for advisory committees, help organize events or get the word out.
Form a mom-to-mom connection
Gather some friends and combine forces to make a difference in another mom’s life by creating a women’s giving circle. It’s a great way to give back in a group, amplify your impact and cultivate a caring community.
Do you have an old crib, clothes, toys or other baby gear lying around? Consider dropping them off at your nearest donation center. Organizations like Mothers Helping Mothers and Mother’s Helper put used goods to great use. Find a similar organization near you or ask your local shelters, schools and day care centers if they accept used children’s goods.
Give back and inspire pride
Now it’s time to go out and show Mom what a community-minded volunteer you’ve become. Find a service opportunity near you with Create the Good.
